From the tradition, the story says "the natives of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Cuba told the early Spanish explorers that in Bimini, a land to the north, there was a river, spring or founatin where waters had such miraculous curative powers that any old person who bathed in them would regain his youth. About the time of Columbus's first voyage, says the legend, an Arawak chief named Sequene, inspired by the fable of the curative waters, had migrated from Cuba to southern Florida. It seems that other parties of islanders had made attempts to find Bimini, which was generalyy described as being in the region of the Bahamas." from a called A Book About American History by George Stimpson.

Juan Ponce De Leon decided to stay in Hispaniola when christopher Columbus returned. While in Hispaniola, he became very popular and was given the position as the governor of Puerto Rico which was then called Boriquien in 1508. During his time there, he heard many stories about a magical fountain of water that would keep you young if you drink it. So he decided to go and search for that water source called the Fountain of Youth.

For a couple of years Ponce De Leon tried searching for the fountain of youth, until he finally thought he knew where it was. So he asked the King of Spain who was King Charles the 5th at that time. The king allowed him to go as long as he payed for the expenses. So Ponce De Leon was off it was in March 1513, they sailed for Bimini. They sailed for days but didn't see the island. On March 27, he saw the coast of Florida. Then on April 2, he landed at what is now called St. Augustine. This is also the first Spanish settlement on the mainland of North America.

After several adventures of fighting off fierce native tribes and discovering hidden wealthy. He returned to Boriquien or Puerto Rico. He went to back to governing the island, while still continuing to hear stories about the fountain fo youth. So in 1521 he set sail again. He also gain permission to settle both Bimini and Florida which he thought was an island. He did build houses in Florida, but he and his men was attacked by natives. Many of them died, but Ponce managed to escaped to his ship and set sail to Cuba and was admitted in a hospital. He later died because of his wounds from Florida. He died in the year of 1521.
